Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) has today announced that former South African skipper Faf du Plessis will be the team's captain in the upcoming IPL 2022 season.

It all began at RCB last year when then captain Virat Kohli decided to step down as the captain of the Bangaluru based franchise after the end of the IPL 2021 season. He followed that up by stepping down as India's captain in all formats of the game as well.

It became a headache to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) management to find a proper replacement of Virat Kohli to lead the team. Even though Shreyas Iyer was highly valued by the team's think tank, they preferred go for IPL 2021's 2nd most run scorer Faf du Plessis, who was later revealed to be their prime target.

RCB announced Faf du Plessis as the captain of the team today, on the 12th March in a special event held in Bengaluru, where a number of RCB players were present for the event before leaving for Mumbai to get into quarantine mode.

Faf du Plessis has finally spoken out on the massive duty that he has been handed by the management. In a video shared on RCB's social media handles, Faf said that he is very excited to be part of the team as IPL is a most awaited in the calendar and said that it is a very new start for him, a new challenge.

Faf du Plessis was snapped up by the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL 2022 Mega Auction for the big price of 7 crore. He last featured for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and was the 2nd most run scorer in IPL 2021, behind his teammate Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) begins their IPL 2022 campaign against the Punjab Kings on the 27th of March, while the tournament kicks-off on the 26th March with Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders playing in the opener.
