IPL 2020: BCCI trashes rumors of hosting IPL 2020 in Sri Lanka

The rumors were rife yesterday that Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has issued a proposal to host IPL 2020 this year. However, the BCCI has denied those rumors, saying that the board has not had any discussions with the Sri Lankan cricket board till now.

The IPL governing council suspended the 2020 edition of the world’s grandest T20 league yesterday because of the Coronavirus pandemic. This outbreak has compelled the entire world to stay in their own houses. Speaking about the situation in India, the Prime Minister of the nation, Narendra Modi kicked off the battle against this disease with a Janta Curfew and then announced two lockdowns.

The ongoing lockdown will end on 3rd May, with the citizens hoping that the pandemic will culminate. There is a possibility that the cricket fans would get to witness IPL 2020 this year only. However, the league’s future also depends on how other countries deal with the COVID-19 disease.

The reason behind it is that a lot of overseas players take part in the IPL. There always remains a minor chance that the disease once again enters India. Thus, BCCI will only conduct the tournament when there is no pandemic.

It is noteworthy that there are still many nations in the world that have very few Coronavirus cases. Sri Lanka is one of them. Thus, a report came out just 1 after the suspension of IPL 2020 that the islanders have asked BCCI to host the competition in Sri Lanka. Earlier also U.A.E. and South Africa have hosted the tournament. Hence, the fans believed that IPL 2020 could take place in Sri Lanka.

However, a BCCI official declined these rumors with the following statement today-

“The BCCI will not be in a position to say anything when the world is closed,”  “There is no proposal from SLC yet and obviously no discussion,”

Thus, IPL 2020 may not take place in Sri Lanka.
