Virat Kohli breaks MS Dhoni's 6-year-old record

Virat Kohli has overtaken former skipper MS Dhoni, on the list of the most runs by an Indian captain in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. During his 74-run knock against Australia at Adelaide Oval, Kohli surpassed Dhoni's tally of 813 runs in this series.

Virat Kohli also shattered Tiger Pataudi's record for the most runs by an Indian captain in IND v AUS Tests. Kohli now has 851 runs in 10 Tests against the Australian cricket team. Meanwhile, Pataudi had aggregated 829 runs in 11 Test matches versus the Aussies.

Sunil Gavaskar and Mohammed Azharuddin are the only other Indian skippers to have aggregated over 500 runs while leading the side versus Australia in the game's most extended format.

Virat Kohli replaced MS Dhoni as the Indian Test team captain in 2015 after the Australian tour. It is pertinent to note that Kohli had led the nation in a couple of Tests versus Australia during that tour.

The new captain scored centuries in both games. Unfortunately, he could not perform up to the mark in the 2016/17 Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home. Nevertheless, he made up for it by scoring 282 runs in the seven Test innings of the subsequent Australian tour.

The Indian cricket team made history by winning the 4-Test series against Australia that year. Virat Kohli's men beat the home side in Adelaide and Melbourne. They could have won the SCG Test as well. Unfortunately, the rain gods did not allow a result in that fixture.

Speaking of the ongoing Test match at Adelaide Oval, Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to bat first. Although the visitors lost Prithvi Shaw on the second ball of the game, Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Ajinkya Rahane took the total past 200.

India ended the day at 233/6, with Wriddhiman Saha and Ravichandran Ashwin in the middle. It will be interesting to see if the lower order could take the score close to 300.
