Zaheer Khan hints Piyush Chawla may bowl with the new ball for MI

The Mumbai Indians are two-time defending IPL champions. They successfully defended their trophy last year in the United Arab Emirates. The Rohit Sharma-led outfit will be keen to complete a hat-trick of championships in the IPL this year.

Since they already had the big guns in their guns, the Mumbai Indians did not bid much at the IPL Auction 2021. They roped in Australian pacer Nathan Coulter-Nile, uncapped overseas star Marco Jansen, New Zealand’s Jimmy Neesham, and India’s leg-spinner Piyush Chawla.

When asked about the decision to sign Piyush Chawla, Mumbai Indians director Zaheer Khan replied:

“You are right in saying that we were looking for experience. Piyush Chawla is someone who has been a part of the World Cup-winning side. He has been under pressure situations before.”

Apart from being a wicket-taking bowler in pressure situations, the Mumbai Indians also expect Piyush Chawla to deliver the goods with the new ball. Mumbai have pace bowlers like Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah, but it seems like Chawla could open the bowling for the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2021.

“What we felt he also brings to the table is bowling with the new ball. I think that is not an easy task for any bowler. Particularly, if you are a spinner, that too a wrist spinner. That is something he has been doing fantastically well and that has certainly caught our eyes when we looked at Piyush. We released a youngster, leg-spinner and we have someone with experience who can bring a different side to our set-up,” Zaheer Khan added.

It will be interesting to see how Piyush Chawla performs for his new franchise. He has been a part of the Kolkata Knight Riders, the Kings XI Punjab, and the Chennai Super Kings before in the IPL. Chawla has also played international games for India.
