5 Players Chennai Super Kings (CSK) Should Have Never Released

The format of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is such that you cannot have comprehensive authority over your squad. The auction and the retainment rules do not permit a franchisee to have one squad for a very prolonged time. Hence, it is inevitable that a team loses one or two good players very often.

Even for a squad like CSK that has an excellent history at the auctions, they have lost a couple of fine players over the course of the tournament. Although it can sometimes go out of our hands, considering the quality of these gentlemen, maybe, the management could have tried better to retain them. Here are the five players whom we are talking about:

1. Ravichandran Ashwin

At the top of the list has to be Ravichandran Ashwin. When CSK was at their peak, Ashwin was one of the pillars of the squad. Along with MSD and Raina, he had also established a superb connect with the fans. Moreover, being a local Chennai-boy, Ashwin's popularity at CSK was massive. Considering all these factors, CSK could have gone the extra mile to retain him. Although many had predicted Ash to fall out of form, to everyone's wonder, the man has adapted himself to the game and is thriving at the moment. If only had he been in CSK today, a lot of problems at the franchise could have been resolved.

2. Chris Morris

Chris Morris actually started out his IPL career at the Chennai Super Kings. A gun death-bowler then, Morris also showed flashes of his skills with the bat in the yellow jersey. However, at one point, his form dropped, and CSK did not decide to retain him. In fact, after his stellar showings, his market-value went beyond CSK's valuation. That said, had CSK not released him, they could have had a good partner to Dwayne Bravo for many seasons. The combo might have done wonders together for the franchise.

3. Vijay Shankar

Vijay Shankar was present on the CSK bench for a very long time. He didn't get many chances and later had to leave the franchise. Considering pace-bowling all-rounders are rare in India, CSK could have had more patience with Vijay. Moreover, he was a homegrown talent, and the management could have thought harder about the prospect in hand. Staying at CSK could have even helped Vijay develop better and become a more impactful player than he is at the moment.

4. Andrew Tye

Season after season, CSK purchases fresh overseas talent in the hope of discovering someone on the lines of Kagiso Rabada or Jofra Archer. However, barring the likes of Doug Bollinger and Chris Morris, CSK has had poor success-rate with their pursuit. We also need to consider the factor of the management's patience on this topic. More than one season must be given to a player for him to show his skills. For people like Andrew Tye, they couldn't offer it and eventually lost him out to other squads. Tye is someone who could have led the bowling unit, but alas, it didn't happen.

5. Jason Holder

Just like Andrew Tye, Jason Holder is another candidate who could not survive long at CSK. The West Indian is one of the best all-rounders in the game, and his performances for SRH have proved the same. With so much promise, CSK's decision making could have been better with regards to Jason. Had they retained him, they would have got a like-to-like replacement for Dwayne Bravo if there were any injuries.
