Washington Sundar reveals how his father will treat Axar, Ishant, and Siraj

Washington Sundar missed out on his first Test hundred at the world’s largest stadium earlier this week. While Sundar batted beautifully against the England cricket team, he ran out of partners and was left stranded on 96*. 

Axar Patel had a solid partnership with Washington Sundar in the middle, but unfortunately, Patel got run out courtesy of Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow. In the next four deliveries, England’s Ben Stokes dismissed both Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Siraj to end India’s innings at 365 runs. 

Washington Sundar was disappointed after Sharma got LBW and Siraj lost his stumps. Sundar’s father has been in the news for his comments on his son’s batting. The Tamil Nadu all-rounder has missed out on his century on two occasions because the tail-enders could not bat with him till the end. 

Here’s what Washington Sundar’s father had to say after his son missed out on his first hundred:

"What I am really disappointed about are the tail-enders. They couldn’t stay on for even a brief while. Suppose India were playing, needing 10 runs to win, wouldn’t this have been a huge mistake. There are millions of youngsters watching, they shouldn’t learn what the tail-enders did. It is not about technique or skills. It was a matter of courage. England were tired, Stokes was bowling at 123-126. They were not bowling at lethal pace.”

Wasim Jaffer related this situation to a scene from 3 Idiots, describing how Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Siraj, and Axar Patel would be treated when they visit Washington Sundar’s home. 

Washington himself preferred to give a reply to Jaffer on Twitter. The Indian all-rounder mentioned that his father would definitely treat the trio with respect and even give them halwa and biryani to eat although their unfortunate dismissals did not allow Sundar to complete his century.
