3 popular players in the current XI who might not play if India qualifies for the WTC Final

India is leading Australia 2-0 in the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy. In all likelihood, we could witness an India vs Australia final for World Test Championship in June this year. Last cycle, too, India had qualified for the finals but lost to the Kiwis. There were a few debatable decisions taken then with respect to the playing XI. Hence, we could have some surprises in playing XI if India qualifies for the WTC final. On that note, in this article, we take a look at three popular players in the current XI who might not play if India qualifies for the WTC Final.

1) Axar Patel

Axar Patel is third on the pecking order when it comes to the Indian spin attack. Considering the WTC final would happen in England and since Axar does not have a lot of experience playing there, he is most likely to be sidelined. In fact, it would not be a surprise if he does not travel altogether.

2) R Ashwin

R Ashwin is one of the popular players in the current XI who might not play if India qualifies for the WTC Final. R Ashwin played for India in the last WTC final. However, in recent years, Ashwin has not consistently found a place in the playing XI when it comes to overseas Tests. With him in the squad, India might have to go in with just three pacers. This may not be adequate. Hence, India could take the hard decision of leaving out Ashwin.

3) Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer has played most of his Tests at home till now. It is well-known that he has a few weaknesses against pace and short balls. The bowlers could exploit this, especially in a country like England. Therefore, India could make a calculated move here. It won't be a surprise if someone like KL Rahul or Shubman Gill will get to play at No.5.
