5 players who could become next RCB captain

The Royal Challengers Bangalore are yet to play their first match in the second phase of the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League, but the team has grabbed the headlines after their captain Virat Kohli announced that the 2021 season will be the last time he plays as the captain of the team.

Earlier this month, Kohli had announced that he would not captain the Indian T20I team after the T20 World Cup 2021, and now he has announced that he would not captain the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

While Virat Kohli has no plans to leave the RCB franchise, he is ready to play under someone else’s captaincy now. The following five players are among the candidates.

1. AB de Villiers

The first player that would come to everyone’s mind is AB de Villiers. The right-handed batsman has captained South Africa before. Also, he has a lot of experience of playing in the Indian Premier League.

2. Ishan Kishan

Ishan Kishan is with the Mumbai Indians now, but there is a chance that he might be released ahead of the IPL Auction 2022. Many fans would know that Kishan was the captain of the Indian U-19 cricket team. So, RCB can target him as a captaincy option.

3. Ajinkya Rahane

Ajinkya Rahane led the Rajasthan Royals to the playoffs in IPL 2018. He has a good rapport with Virat Kohli as he is his deputy in the Test format at the international level. Rahane is warming the bench at Delhi Capitals right now. Perhaps, RCB can use him in a better way in 2022.

4. Steve Smith

Former Australian captain Steve Smith led Rising Pune Supergiant to the IPL 2017 Final. He has leadership experience. Also, he will have the support of Virat Kohli. So, he could be a decent captaincy pick for RCB.

5. Mayank Agarwal

Mayank Agarwal recently captained the Punjab Kings team. Many fans would know that he is a former Royal Challengers Bangalore player. If Punjab release him, RCB should certainly look at him as a potential captain because he has played a lot of cricket in Bengaluru.
