Simon Taufel believes Virender Sehwag, Virat Kohli, and Ravi Ashwin can become the best umpires in the future

Simon Taufel is regarded as one of the most respected umpires in the world. He is a former member of the ICC Elite umpire panel. The 51-year-old has won ICC Umpire of the Year awards for five successive years between 2004 and 2008. Without a doubt, he is one of the best umpires that the game has seen.

However, he announced his retirement after the 2012 T20 World Cup final on September 26, 2012. He later served as the International Cricket Council's Umpire Performance and Training Manager until October 2015. He joined Channel Seven's commentary team as an expert commentator for the 2020/21 test series in 2020.

But now, Taufel has started an online platform for those who want to learn the basics of umpiring. He came up with an online accreditation programme to minimise the errors happening on the fields by the umpires.

The course will have three accreditation levels: introductory, Level 1, and Level 2. Taufel developed the programme in collaboration with the ICC Cricket Academy in Dubai. During a discussion with News9 Sports, the 51-year-old opened up further about the details of his course.

He also spoke about the conversation he had with former Indian opener Virender Sehwag. He said that Sehwag used to field near the umpire and he always used to tell what was out or what was not out. However, Taufel also said that the former Indian opener wasn't looking to be an umpire in the future after his retirement.

When asked about any player who could be a good umpire, Taufel named three Indian players who could become the best umpires in the future. He said that Virendra Sehwag, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin could do that job.

Taufel said, :I'd love to see Virender Sehwag, maybe even Virat Kohli or Ravichandran Ashwin take it up. They seem to be very well on top of the laws and playing conditions of the game at the moment."
