"I don't have a tree in my house to grow money" – Gautam Gambhir hits back at journalist for asking silly question
Gautam Gambhir is a well-known cricketer in India who is known for his candid and unvarnished thoughts on and off the field. After retiring from cricket, the southpaw has worked as a politician. When asked about his participation in the IPL while being an active politician in a recent interview, he responded in his characteristic Gambhir way.
In past seasons, the former KKR captain worked as a commentator for the IPL. This year, though, he served as a mentor for the Lucknow Supergiants franchise. The Lucknow-based franchise made it to the playoffs in their first season under his guidance before being knocked out by RCB.
In the same region, the World Cup champion has also established a library. When asked about his responsibilities to the IPL despite being an active Member of Parliament, the veteran responded strongly. Gambhir is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and represents the East Delhi constituency (BJP). In addition, the former cricketer maintains a kitchen called 'Jan Rasoi,' which serves meals to the poor for just Re 1. The kitchen was established as part of the 'Ek Asha Jan Rasoi' programme, which aims to eliminate hunger and malnutrition in society.
"I commentate on IPL or work in it because every month I spend INR 25 lakh to feed 5000 people." "I paid for everything out of my own wallet, my cooking or other activities are not supported by the MPLAD funding. "Neither do I have a tree in my house from which I can pluck money," he said." The MPLAD grant does not support my kitchen or other activities. He continued, "I don't have a tree in my house from which I can pluck money either."
The Delhi resident claimed that he has no qualms about declaring that he is a part of an IPL team and conducts IPL commentary. "Because I work, I can only feed those 5000 people and construct that library." I have no reservations about announcing the IPL and working in it. He said that everything he does always has an end goal.
