IPL 2022 Playoffs: Super Over to decide the result in case of any interruption

The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League has reached its business end and four teams will fight to get their name on the most prestigious T20 trophy. However, not to lose any gametime and a result can be determined, so the IPL committee has decided some rules for the playoffs and final.

In case any match gets abandoned due to bad weather conditions, the match will be decided on the basis of a Super Over. In the second scenario, if the match remains unplayable due to the bad condition of the ground, then the team with more points in the league standings will be decided as the winner.

The Qualifier 1 will be played between Gujarat Titans and Rajasthan Royals on May 24 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The Eliminator will be played on May 25 between Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bangalore on the same ground. However, as per the weather conditions, the forecast is not that good for the first couple of days.

As per the report, it is learnt that for the first three playoff games, an extra two hours of time will be added in case there are any kind of delays. That means both the qualifiers and the eliminator can begin at 9:30 p.m., and the final can begin at 10.10 p.m., with no over lost.

Both the strategic timeout breaks will still be applicable; only the delayed start will have an effect on the mid-innings break. The guidelines confirm that "The number of overs in the playoff match may, if necessary, be reduced so that each side has the opportunity to bat for five overs."

There is no reserve day for the three playoff matches. The guidelines added that if there is no play till the extended time, then a super over will decide the match result, which can start till 12:50am as per latest developments.

The final is scheduled to start at 8 pm on May 29, but in case of play called off, May 30 has been decided as the reserve day. For both qualifiers and the eliminator, if the first inning is completed and the second innings can't be done, then the DLS method will be applicable to determine the result.

If during the play in the final match, by any interruption, the play can't be done, the play will start from the same point on the reserve day. However, if the toss has been completed and a start is not possible, a new toss will be conducted on the reserve day.

For the final match, if a five-over match can't be possible, the super over will decide the match result, and the super over can start till 1:20 am.
