Shubham Gill breaks massive record of Sachin Tendulkar in 1st ODI vs West Indies

The first match of the three-match ODI series between India and West Indies is underway at Queen's Park Oval. It was the West Indies that won the toss and decided to bat first. Well, the surprise was the opening partner of skipper Shikhar Dhawan.

It was Shubman Gill who was given a chance to open the innings. And it was a dream start for the Men in Blue. Both openers took on the charge and kept scoring runs in all parts of the ground. In 17.4 overs, Gill and Dhawan added 119 runs for the first wicket.

Shubman Gill looked good in particular and played some gorgeous shots. He brought up his maiden ODI half-century off just 36 balls. He was looking very good for a big score, but unfortunately he was run out by West Indies skipper Nicholas Pooran.

However, before getting out, he registered a big record. In fact, he broke the record of the legendary Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar. He became the youngest Indian opener to score a fifty in the West Indies.

Gill scored his fifth at 23 years and 317 days, while Sachin took 24 years and 2 days when he scored his first fifty in the West Indies. Gill made 64 off 53 balls, including six boundaries and two maximums.

Speaking of the match, the visitors are in a good position with their top three batters having scored their half-centuries each. Apart from Gill, Shreyas Iyer scored 54 balls and skipper Dhawan missed his century by just three runs. He got out after scoring 97 runs.

Notably, KL Rahul, who tested COVID positive, is out of the series while Ravindra Jadeja was ruled out of the first match due to a niggle. For West Bengal, Jason Holder has been ruled out after testing positive for COVID-19.
