"They'll need to wait..."- Indian batting coach reveals why Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan are benched in ODIs vs SL

India has already won the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, with the third and final match to be played on Sunday in Trivandrum. However, as the third game is a dead rubber for India, it will be interesting to see whether India makes any changes to the playing XI or not.

However, the playing XI in both games has caught the attention of many. India benched Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan in both games. Notably, Indian batting coach Vikram Rathour said that both Suryakumar and Kishan are mature enough to understand why they are not playing.

Meanwhile, many former cricketers and experts believe that these two players should get a chance in the playing XI as they are in good form. However, the Indian captain, Rohit Sharma, confirmed ahead of the start of the series that Shubham Gill would get the chance ahead of Kishan.

Although India hasn't missed either player, it has registered back-to-back wins in the first two games. Meanwhile, ahead of the third ODI, in a press conference, the Indian batting coach was asked about Suryakumar and Kishan missing out.

Rathour said, “They are not really forced. The others are doing well as well. There is nobody doing badly. As players, they have this understanding that somebody else is doing well. They’ll need to wait for the opportunity. They are preparing for that."

He added that both Surya and Kishan are training hard, are ready whenever the opportunity comes, and will do well. He stated that the No. 1 ranked T20I batter is sitting on the bench, which reflects the brilliant bench strength that India has at the moment.

Surya has been in the form of his life in T20Is, but his ODI numbers are below his standards. He is averaging 32 in 16 games with two 50s. When asked whether Kishan can be given a chance in the middle order, Rathour said that he has been picked as an opener, but if management wants, we can try him in the middle-order as well.
