Watch: Great Gesture as Shami runs Shanaka out at bowler's end; later Rohit withdraws appeal to help SL skipper reach his century
In reply, Sri Lanka made 306/8 in their chase. The Sri Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka was the lone survivor for the host as he smashed an unbeaten century off 87 balls and made 108 runs with 12 fours and three sixes, but apart from him, not many batters could contribute.
Shanaka scored his second ODI century on the fifth ball of the last over of the match. However, there was a moment when Shanaka got out at the non-striker's end in the final over by Mohammed Shami. India started the year with a good win, and all the batters looked in great touch.
The mankad run-out took place on the fourth ball of the last over of the game, when Shanaka was two runs away from his second ODI century. He left the crease, and Shami removed the bails off the stumps at the bowler's end.
However, for confirmation, the on-field umpire signalled for upstairs, but the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma was seen telling the umpire to withdraw the appeal and continue the proceedings. The Sri Lankan skipper later struck a brilliant boundary on the fifth ball to complete his century and end the innings with a brilliant six.
Meanwhile, Virat Kohli continued his impressive ODI form and scored his successive century; it was his 45th ODI hundred, which came off 80 balls. He scored 113 off 87 balls and helped India reach 373. As a result, he was also adjudged the "Man of the Match."
