Emirates Cricket Board earned 100 Crores from the BCCI for hosting IPL 2020 in UAE

The United Arab Emirates became the second foreign country after South Africa to host an entire IPL season. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the BCCI could not organize the league in India. Thus, they had to take the tournament to the Gulf nation, where three venues hosted the matches behind closed doors.

IPL 2020 was a highly competitive season of the tournament as no one knew which four teams would qualify for the playoffs until the last league match. Ultimately, the Mumbai Indians, the Delhi Capitals, the Sunrisers Hyderabad, and the Royal Challengers Bangalore made it to the Top 4.

The Mumbai Indians made it to the final after defeating the Delhi Capitals in Qualifier 1. Next, the Sunrisers Hyderabad eliminated the Royal Challengers Bangalore. However, the Orange Army could not beat the Shreyas Iyer-led outfit in Qualifier 2. Ultimately, MI retained their title by defeating DC in the summit clash.

Although there was a COVID outbreak in the Chennai Super Kings earlier, the tournament happened safely in the UAE with no players breaking the bio-bubble rules. There were zero positive cases during the entire IPL 2020 and that was the biggest plus point.

Speaking of the venues that hosted the competition, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah ensured that there were competitive matches throughout the season. Sharjah also hosted the Jio Women’s T20 Challenge 2020.

According to Mumbai Mirror, UAE made 100 Crores rupees for hosting IPL 2020 across three venues. Generally, BCCI pays hosting fees to the state associations. But since the IPL 13 tournament happened outside India, Emirates Cricket Board took the entire sum home. It is pertinent to note that the Sri Lanka Cricket Board had also proposed to host the tournament. However, BCCI allotted the tourney to the UAE.

Recently, it was reported that the Gulf country could also host the India vs England series if the situation does not improve in India.
