"Sachin stopped me"- Virender Sehwag reveals when he wanted to quit ODIs after getting dropped from team by MS Dhoni

Virendra Sehwag is one of the best opening batsmen that the game has seen. The former Indian opener is famous for his aggressive batting and fearsome approach irrespective of the format. He was also one of the instrumental parts of the Indian team winning the World Cups in 2007 and 2011.

During his 14-year-long career, he has achieved many things that many cricketers dream of. But that was not always the same. Especially late in his career, there was a point when he wanted to quit ODI cricket. This was the incident during the Common Wealth Series 2007-08 in Australia.

The 43-year-old revealed that during the Australian tour, he failed to make any impact in the first four ODI matches that he got the chance. He only managed 6, 33, 11, and 14 and later was dropped from the playing XI by the then captain, MS Dhoni.

India created history by winning that tri-series and winning the best of three finals by 2-0 against Australia. However, Sehwag was not part of any one of those. During a discussion on a cricket show called "Match Party" on Cricbuzz, the former opener revealed that after getting dropped from the team, he thought of retiring from the format.

He said that when he failed, the question of retirement came to his mind. However, he came back fantastically in the Test series and scored 150, but in ODIs he didn't do much. Then he decided to quit the ODI format and focus more on red-ball cricket.

Sehway then said that he discussed it with Sachin Tendulkar but he stopped him from doing so and asked him to go home after the tour and take his time to think. Furthermore, he said, "Luckily I didn't announce my retirement at that time."

Sehwag added that there are always two types of cricketers who like challengers and react on the field by scoring runs, as Virat is. And there are others who don't care about the criticism because they know that they have given their best. He concluded, "I was that kind of player. I didn't care who criticised me. I wanted to play, score runs, and go home."
