Shikhar Dhawan creates history, becomes the first Indian captain to achieve this feat
Despite the interruption from rain on a continuous basis, Shikhar Dhawan and his team registered a thumping win in the third and final ODI match against West Indies on Wednesday to win the series 3-0. With this win, India has continued their domination over the Men in Maroon.
Notably, this was the 12th successive bilateral series win for India against West Indies, which is the most by any team against one opponent. But more than that, the Indian skipper, Shikhar Dhawan, has written his name in the record books and became the first ever Indian captain to achieve this feat.
Dhawan captained the side in the absence of Rohit Sharma, as the BCCI gave rest to the senior players for the ODI series. And with the completely new Indian side, the southpaw has whitewashed the Men in Maroon in grand fashion.
With this, he has now become the first and only Indian captain to whitewash the West Indies in their own backyard. Prior to him, none of the Indian skippers had done this. Dhawan has certainly done a tremendous job both individually and as a captain as well in this ODI series.
During the Indian innings, the rain interrupted the play three or four times. Firstly, the game was reduced to 40 overs, but then, with another rain delay, the innings was over after 36 overs.
Unfortunately, Gill, who was looking good for his maiden international century, remained not out, just two runs short of his hundred before the final rain break. India made 225/3 in 36 overs and as per the D/L method, West Indies got the target of 256 runs in 35 overs.
However, it was enough for the Indian bowlers to win the game. Siraj set the tone by taking two wickets in his first three balls of the innings. Then other bowlers also chipped in. But in the end, it was Yuzvendra Chahal who cleaned up the tail and West Indies were bowled out for just 137 runs.
Chahal, picked up four, while Siraj and Shardul took two wickets each. India won the match by 119 runs by the D/L method. Shubman Gill was adjudged the "Man of the Match" and "Man of the Series" for his consistency with the bat.
