India to face Rest of World's XI on August 16 to celebrate the 75th Independence Day, Sourav Ganguly will lead India
The speculative match between India and the Rest of the World XI is finally going to happen. This game will take place as a special match in order to celebrate the 75th Independence Day for the county. This special game will be played on August 16 at one of the most iconic grounds, Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
This match will also see the former Indian skipper and the president of the BCCI, Sourav Ganguly, leading the Indian Maharajas team against the World Giants. Former England captain Eoin Morgan will lead the World Giants team in that match.
Earlier, the central government requested the Indian board to arrange a cricket match on August 22 between India and the rest of the world in order to propose the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations for the 75th anniversary of Independence Day for India.
However, due to the international schedules and ongoing leagues in England and the upcoming Caribbean Premier League, the availability of big names was in question. And as per the latest schedule, this game is scheduled for August 16th with some of the big names in the game.
A total of 15 games will be played across six venues over 22 days. In addition to Ganguly, India Maharajas will feature Virender Sehwag, Mohd Kaif, Irfan and Pathan Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Parthiv Patel, and many more former stars.
The World Giants team will feature the likes of former South African pacer Dale Steyn, all-rounder Jacques Kallis, and batters Herschelle Gibbs and Jonty Rhodes. Apart from these stars, the Sri Lankan legendary pair of Sanath Jayasuriya and Muttiah Muralitharan will also appear, along with Mitchell Johnson and Brett Lee.
