Ollie Robinson suspended from international cricket
Ollie Robinson is all set to face suspension and will miss the second test against New Zealand at Birmingham, commencing Thursday. After an impressive test debut against New Zealand, most recently at the Lord’s, his 9-year-old tweets went viral. It is usual for the fans and the general public to go and visit a trending cricketer’s social media profiles.
It was found out that the bowling allrounder had tweeted sexist and racist remarks way back in 2012. Upon investigation, the cricketer has been found guilty and is suspended by the England Cricket Board (ECB) from playing international cricket.
Soon after the first day of the Lord’s test, the cricketer took to social media and apologized for the remarks he made as an 18-year-old. Ollie mentioned that he was going through a rough patch in his life at that time and apologized remorsefully.
In the apology message, he said that he wanted to get himself cleared that he does not support racism and is not a sexist. Feeling ashamed of his remarks, he went on to add that he was irresponsible and thoughtless at the time of tweeting such statements. The actions are inexcusable regardless of his state of mind nine years ago, he said. He also stated that since then, he has turned up as a mature individual.
ECB issues statement to suspend Ollie Robinson
“England and Sussex bowler Ollie Robinson has been suspended from all global cricket pending the final results of disciplinary research following ancient tweets he published in 2012 and 2013. Robinson will depart the England camp at once and go back to his county,” the official ECB statement read.
He could be playing the test series against India in August if the issue is solved. Meanwhile, he could play for Sussex in the counties.
Captain Joe Root, however, defended the Rookie All-rounder, saying that his remorsefulness was genuine, and he has addressed the dressing room and the media gracefully, expressing his regrets. However, such remarks are not acceptable anyway.
