In recent times, the concept of 'Retired Out' is getting prominent in the game of cricket. However, it is purely restricted to the T20 format, at least, for now. In IPL 2022, we saw R Ashwin make use of this tactic to allow Riyan Parag to operate in the middle. Later, in the other leagues, too, this happened. However, it needs to be noted that it was a long time ago that this tactic was first used. In fact, it was used at the international level in Test cricket! Some legends of the game were involved as a part of this strategy. On that note, in this article, we take a look at two players who got 'retired out' in the history of Test cricket.

1) Marvan Atapattu

It was in a game in 2000 against Bangladesh that this happened. The Test match was going in one direction and the Sri Lankan batters were punishing the Bangladeshi bowlers. Marvan had got to his 200 and the skipper Sanath Jayasuriya called him back after the player reached his milestone. Thus, he became the first player to get retired out in the game's history.

2) Mahela Jayawardene

Mahela Jayawardene is one of the players who got 'retired out' in the history of Test cricket. In the same match that Marvan Atapattu got retired out, Mahela was also retired out in the same manner. In Mahela's case, though, he was retired out after he got his 150. Currently, the former Sri Lankan cricketer is a part of the backroom staff of Mumbai Indians. Therefore, he can make use of this tactic in IPL, as well.
