3 current red-ball captains who do not play ODI cricket right now
Yes, the red-ball and the white-ball formats are different but we have many players who operate in all three formats of the game. There are, of course, who are specialists in each format of the game, too. That said, we can expect players to be a part of the ODI setup to also have a role in Tests. Especially if a cricketer is the captain of the Test side, it is normal to expect him in the 50-over Team. However, it is not the case with a few teams. In this article, we take a look at three current red-ball captains who do not play ODI cricket right now.
1) Dimuth Karunaratne - Sri Lanka
Dimuth Karunaratne is one of the best openers in Test cricket right now. The Sri Lankan Test skipper does not feature in the ODI format. He last played an ODI in 2021. The white-ball setup has better openers suited to the format and hence, Dimuth does not find a place here.
2) Kraig Brathwaite - West Indies
Kraig Brathwaite is one of the current red-ball captains who do not play ODI cricket right now. It was way back in 2017 that he last played an ODI. The opener has been in good form for West Indies and he has already played 85 games for them.
3) Ben Stokes - England
Ben Stokes is the latest entrant to this list. A few months ago, shockingly, Ben Stokes announced his retirement from the ODI format. There are calls asking him to come out of retirement to play in the 2023 ODI World Cup. However, it will be unfair for the other aspirants. That said, interestingly, Stokes plays in T20s for England. He even won the World Cup recently in Australia.
