3 players who can break Mahela Jayawardene's record for most runs in T20 WC history

The T20 World Cup will start on October 16 in Australia next month. It will be the 8th edition of the WT20. Australia, who won the last edition in 2021, will defend their title. A total of 16 teams and over 240 players will play in this tournament.

Over the years, we have seen some of the world's best batsmen dominate in T20 World Cup history. But there is only one batsman who has scored 1000+ runs in the history of WT20. He is none other than the former Sri Lankan skipper, Mahela Jayawardene, who has scored the most runs in T20 WC history.

Jayawardene has played 31 matches and has scored 1016 runs. Chris Gayle (965) and Tilakaratne Dilshan (897) are behind him, but both are not in this 2022 T20 WC. But there are three players that are in contention to break that record set by Jayawardene.

3. David Warner (Australia)

David Warner has been in prime form and that's what he showed in the T20 World Cup 2021 in the UAE. He was the "Man of the Tournament" in the previous edition and was one of the prime reasons that Australia won their maiden T20 World title. Warner has played 30 matches so far and scored 762 runs, and needs another 254 runs to become the highest run-getter in T20 World Cup history. He scored 289 runs in the 2021 edition and needs one more such performance this time around.

2. Virat Kohli (India)

If we look at the history of the T20 World Cup, one batsman will surely stand out, and he is none other than the former Indian skipper, Virat Kohli, the only batsman in history to win two "Man of the Tournament" awards. Kohli has played 19 innings so far and has scored 845 runs at an incredible average of 76.81. He just needs 171 runs in the 2022 WT20 to register his name as the top run-getter in T20 World Cup history. And given the form he has shown in the Asia Cup, the chances are looking bright.

1. Rohit Sharma (India)

Speaking of the list of highest run-scorers in the T20 World Cup, Rohit Sharma is in fourth place. But all three above him are retired now, which gives him the right opportunity to end as the highest run-getter in the T20 WC. Rohit is also one of the two players to have played in all editions of the T20 WC. He has played 31 matches and scored 847 runs and needs another 169 runs to go past Jayawardene's tally of 1016 runs.
