When a franchise releases a cricketer, it means it would be hard for them to have a role when they come back to the team later, if the franchise decides to buy them. However, in certain cases, the reasons for releasing a player could be different and hence, a player returning to a franchise has also got a chance to lead the squad. On that note, in this article, we take a look at three popular players who returned to their first IPL franchise and captained the team again.

1) MS Dhoni - Chennai Super Kings

Of course, with MS Dhoni, the reason was different. CSK was not in the competition and MSD joined Rising Pune Supergiant. While he led the team in the first edition, it was Steve Smith's turn in the second. When CSK returned back, there was no doubt as to who would lead the squad. In 2018, MS Dhoni even led CSK to an IPL win.

2) Gautam Gambhir - Delhi Capitals

Gautam Gambhir is one of the popular players who returned to their first IPL franchise and captained the team again. After enjoying his peak at Kolkata Knight Riders, winning two trophies, Gambhir decided he wanted a new challenge. Hence, he made the move to Delhi Capitals (formerly known as Delhi Daredevils) for IPL 2018. He was the captain of the squad but he was poor with his displays. Later, Shreyas Iyer became the skipper of the team.

3) David Warner - Delhi Capitals

David Warner led Delhi in two games when he was first part of the franchise. In Sunrisers Hyderabad, he won a trophy and had an impressive contribution as a captain. Now, in IPL 2023, Warner will lead Delhi again. Since Rishabh Pant is absent, Warner will have to don the armband for the team.
