Leading a Test squad requires an in-depth understanding of the game. Apart from experience to devise the right tactics, other factors such as patience and determination are also necessary. Some players have exhibited these qualities at both junior and senior levels.
1) Krishnamachari Srikkanth
The Tamil Nadu opener is the first captain of the India U19 Test Team. He was at the helm for just two encounters but at the senior level, he was captain for 4 games. An excellent opener, Srikkanth did show a lot of necessary requirements of a skipper. However, he found it hard to maintain consistency and later had to give up the post. In fact, in Tests, he lost all four matches as the skipper
2) Ravi Shastri
Ravi Shastri is one of the Indians who captained the U19 Test Team and also the senior Test Team. The former India all-rounder led the Youth Test Team for 3 matches while he led the senior squad for one game. He won that match but never got the chance again. Interestingly, he was also the Head Coach of the senior squad for a while. Shastri did have a sizeable time as a skipper but he was not able to leave an overall impression.
3) Rahul Dravid
The current Head Coach of the senior squad, Dravid was the skipper of the U19 Team for two games. Later, he led India in 25 Tests but could gain victories only in eight matches. He later had to resign from the role and Anil Kumble took over the responsibility from him.
4) Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli is also one of the Indians who captained the U19 Test Team and also the senior Test Team. While he led the India U19 Test Team in two matches, in total, he led the senior squad 68 times. In fact, Virat is the most successful Test skipper for India and it would be a while before anyone breaks it.
