Although there is a three-year cycle to reset squads in the IPL, franchises try to maintain a philosophy along with the core of the squad. This requires some members to be backed for a long time, both as players or as part of the backroom. On that note, in this article, we take a look at four individuals who captained an IPL team and then became the Head Coach of the same franchise.

Foreign players and their association with IPL franchises are strong at times. In the past, we have seen the likes of Kieron Pollard and AB de Villiers retire although they could have still played a few more years. In some cases, players also got a chance to coach the side after their retirement. We take a look at such names in the below headings:

Note: We have only considered players who had a captaincy and coaching stint at different points. Hence, coach-cum-captains like Shane Warne and Ricky Ponting are not considered.

1) Shaun Pollock (Mumbai Indians)

Shaun Pollock is one of the individuals who captained an IPL team and then became the Head Coach of the same franchise. In the absence of Sachin Tendulkar, South African pacer Shaun Pollock got a chance to captain a few games for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2008. Later, he retired and he was the Head Coach of the side in IPL 2009. Later, he even served a stint as the team's bowling coach.

2) Brendon McCullum (Kolkata Knight Riders)

After Sourav Ganguly, Brendon McCullum was the skipper of KKR. The Kiwi led the team in 13 encounters. Later, Bazz played for teams such as CSK, GL and RCB. KKR later appointed him as the Head Coach and the Kiwi was at the helm until IPL 2021. He has now taken over the England Test Team and Chandrakant Pandit has replaced him as the KKR Head Coach.

3) Jacques Kallis (Kolkata Knight Riders)

Jacques Kallis is also one of the individuals who captained an IPL team and then became the Head Coach of the same franchise. Kallis led KKR for just two games but later got a chance to become the Head Coach of the side. He got sufficient time to prove his skills but KKR did not thrive under him. Hence, he had to be replaced.

4) Daniel Vettori (Royal Challengers Bangalore)

Vettori led RCB during the transition before Virat Kohli took over the squad. The Kiwi also led the team to the finals. Later, he was also appointed as the Head Coach of the side. However, in the final few years of his coaching stint at RCB, the franchise suffered heavily. This was a disappointing phase in RCB's history. After the likes of Mike Hesson came into the picture, RCB is doing well now.
