It is not a criterion that a successful coach should have played a lot of the game, let alone captained his/her nation. That said, in the current era where tactics are playing a massive role in the game, a good captaincy stint already makes the resume impressive for the role of a Head Coach. Especially in the IPL, this is prevalent as the likes of Mahela Jayawardene and Stephen Fleming have found massive success.

On the other hand, there have been many who were not even close to captaincy but have done well in a coaching role. On that note, in this article, we take a look at four players who never captained their country but became successful IPL Head coaches.

1) Ashish Nehra

Ashish Nehra is one of the four players who never captained their country but became successful IPL Head Coach. After his stint with RCB, many felt that Nehra may not become a great coach. However, he surprised everyone as he helped Gujarat Titans win IPL in 2022. Adding more context, after the auctions, GT was seen as one of the weakest squads. However, Nehra had a simplistic approach and helped his team win the competition.

2) Darren Lehmann

The Australian cricketer never captained his nation. In 2009, he won the title with Deccan Chargers. He later coached Australia and also helped them do well. Although his coaching stint with Australia did not end well, he is still credited with a lot of positive things that have happened with Australia recently. In IPL, though, Lehmann does not have a contract at the moment.

3) Tom Moody

Tom Moody is also one of the four players who never captained their country but became successful IPL Head Coach. With the Sunrisers Hyderabad, Moody has found massive success, including winning the title in 2016. His strategies have met good success, and he is still part of the SRH backroom staff. A few years ago, he was in the running to become the India Coach, as well. It may not be a surprise if it happens in the future.

4) Trevor Bayliss

Trevor Bayliss won multiple trophies with KKR but it needs to be noted that he never even played for his country. As per reports, he could become the next Head Coach of Punjab Kings. A man of varied ideas, Bayliss has been successful in winning multiple trophies in his career, so far.
