4 popular players who recently announced retirement from one format only

Retired from one format

Almost every cricketer is now involved in three formats of the game. Apart from his/her nation, there is also the responsibility to take part in various T20 leagues. In this context, many have had to take a few decisions to manage their workload. On that note, in this article, we take a look at 4 popular players who recently announced retirement from one format only.

Retiring from one format is a conscious decision a few players take to prolong their careers in the other formats. It is also a logical move considering their fitness and other aspects. A few players have already made that decision and we could see many more make it in the coming months.

1) Ben Stokes - ODI

Ben Stokes is one of the popular players who recently announced retirement from one format only. Winner of the 2019 World Cup, Stokes shocked everyone by announcing that he would be retiring from ODIs. However, this decision was on the expected lines. Recently appointed as the country's Test skipper, Stokes will have to play each game in the five-day format. He also needs to focus on T20 cricket for his own benefit. Hence, he quit the ODI format to manage his workload.

2) Quinton de Kock - Test

Quinton de Kock surprised all by retiring from Tests at the end of last year. Not many expected the decision but it was understandable after he explained it. Also, from South Africa's long-term view, it was a good decision because QDK will now place all his focus on the shorter formats, thereby helping the Proteas win a few trophies. Meanwhile, South Africa is managing well in replacing QDK in the Test line-up.

3) Tamim Iqbal - T20I

Tamim Iqbal is also one of the popular players who recently announced retirement from one format only. The Bangladesh opener has been on and off from the T20 format for a while now. Most players, barring the Test specialists, give focus to the T20 format. However, Tamim has retired from this format, making his intentions clear going forward. Bangladesh will have a challenging task replacing the experienced cricketer.

4) Kevin O'Brien - ODI

The Irish all-rounder gave away ODI cricket to focus on T20Is. However, he is not part of the Irish setup right now. Nevertheless, he is an experienced cricketer and will surely get a chance in the coming months. For that to happen, Kevin needs to do well in the domestic tournaments. He will next take part in the Legends League Cricket season 2.
