Captain SRH

SA20 recently concluded with the Sunrisers Eastern Cape lifting the trophy. All the franchises in the competition are owned by IPL Team owners. Hence, inevitably, a few learnings from the tournament would trickle over to the IPL, as well. In this article, we take a look at four things that could happen in IPL 2023 due to the direct impact of the first season of SA20.

In the past, we have seen strategies being used in other competitions getting explored in the IPL. Now that a few teams have a first-hand experience with a few ideas, this could lead them to make decisions accordingly for IPL 2023.

1) Aiden Markram could become the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad

Sunrisers Hyderabad released Kane Williamson before IPL 2023 Auctions. Hence, there are doubts about who would lead the team next. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Aiden Markram are the existing options while Mayank Agarwal is a newly added option. However, with Markram leading Sunrisers to a win in SA20, he has easily gone ahead of the others in the pecking order. In Markram, SRH would get a calm leader who would also add plenty of experience to the line-up with his skills.

2) Gujarat Titans could search for an alternate vice-captain for Hardik Pandya

Gujarat Titans searching for an alternate vice-captain could be one of the things that could happen in IPL 2023 as a direct impact of the first season of SA20. Rashid Khan had a poor outing at SA20 2023, mainly as a captain. He was poor in making a few decisions which eventually impacted the team. Therefore, GT could look for an alternative to Rashid as the vice-captain of the unit. Shubman Gill and David Miller are two options available.

3) Heinrich Klaasen could start ahead of Glenn Phillips for SRH

Thanks to his brilliant show at the 2022 T20 World Cup, Glenn Phillips was retained by SRH. Many thought he would also be a confirmed starter. However, Heinrich Klaasen was in superb form in SA20 and since he is also an excellent player of spin, he could be the first-choice wicket-keeper for SRH at IPL 2023.

4) Dewald Brevis may not be a confirmed starter for Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians might not give Dewald Brevis a lot of chances due to his performance in the first edition of SA20. Although he started well, his form dropped as the tournament progressed for Brevis. A few of his weaknesses were also exposed in the process. With this, he may not guarantee a spot in the Mumbai Indians' starting XI. Instead, Cameron Green could be used in the top order while Tristan Stubbs and Tim David could play in the middle-order.
