5 Indians who could be playing their last Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2023
The upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy will be an important one for Team India. It will decide whether the team plays the final of the WTC or not. At the same time, the upcoming series could mark the end of a few fine players in this clash. In this article, we take a look at five Indians who could be playing their last Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2023.
BGT is one of the important events in Test cricket along with the Ashes. After the upcoming clash, the next one is likely to happen in 2024 in Australia as per the reports. India is likely to have a new Test Team by then. Hence, we could see some cricketers playing their final BGT in 2023.
1) Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma is one of the Indians who could be playing their last Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2023. Due to his fitness issues, Rohit has missed a lot of Tests in recent months. Therefore, it will not be a surprise if Team India moves on from Rohit in Tests. India needs a captain who plays consistently and it is better to choose a younger candidate. Hence, the next time the BGT happens, Rohit may not be in the Test squad.
2) R Ashwin
R Ashwin has not been used often on overseas pitches, especially in the SENA Nations. Considering his age and the fact that India might visit Australia for the next BGT, Ashwin may not be a part of it. Hence, he is also on this list.
3) Cheteshwar Pujara
Pujara is also one of the Indians who could be playing their last Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2023. Although he has got a few runs recently, Pujara has been having a hard time with consistency. India needs a solid No.3 for the future and the right time to groom someone might be soon after the WTC cycle this year. Hence, Pujara might not get a lot of chances after this WTC.
4) Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli has the fitness to be a part of the Test Team but it will be his batting form that will decide his stay in the squad. Unless he gets a few big scores in the upcoming tournaments, it is very difficult to expect Virat Kohli in the squad when India tours Australia the next time around.
5) Umesh Yadav
Umesh Yadav is also one of the Indians who could be playing their last Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2023. Not many realize but Umesh Yadav is 35 years old. He is not the first-choice pacer in the Indian Test XI. Only if there are any injuries, Umesh gets a game. With the likes of Prasidh Krishna and even Umran Malik waiting for their test debuts, Umesh might not feature in the Test squad after this WTC cycle.
