CSA T20 League IPL 2009

The South African T20 League is set to have its first edition at the beginning of 2023. Six of the Indian IPL franchise owners have also won the bids for the teams in this league. In this article, we take a look at five players who played in the 2009 IPL in South Africa and may also feature in CSA T20 League.

IPL 2009 was held in South Africa because of the General Elections in India. It was a stunning event with Deccan Chargers winning the competition. It has been 13 years since the tournament was held. Now, it will be a sort of a repeat with IPL franchises making their presence felt in the Rainbow Nation again. In fact, a few players who played in that tournament may also feature in the upcoming CSA T20 League. We take a look at five such names in the below sections.

1) Chris Gayle - Kolkata Knight Riders

Chris Gayle is one of the players who played in the 2009 IPL in South Africa and may also feature in the CSA T20 League. The West Indian opener is in the final few stages of his career. However, CSA T20 League needs such popular cricketers and hence, Graeme Smith and co. might sign him for the event. It needs to be seen if Gayle would accept that.

2) Roelof van der Merwe - Royal Challengers Bangalore

The Dutch all-rounder had a decent show for RCB in IPL 2009. He had a few impact contributions for the eventual finalists. A lot has happened in his career since then. That said, some of the franchises could be interested in his services despite his age. He has good experience and being a born South African, it becomes necessary for the league to have such players.

3) Ravi Bopara - Kings XI Punjab

37-year-old Ravi Bopara is popular across various T20 leagues. Therefore, it would not be a surprise if he plays in the South African League, as well. It needs to be noted that he was also a part of IPL back then. Hence, Bopara is also a part of this list of players who played in the 2009 IPL in South Africa and may also feature in the CSA T20 League.

4) Dwayne Bravo - Mumbai Indians

With the CSK owners involved in CSA T20 League, Bravo could feature in the tournament. He was also a part of IPL 2009 for Mumbai Indians. An intelligent bowler, Bravo can also add value with his batting skills at No.7 or even a few positions above.

5) David Warner - Delhi Daredevils

David Warner is also one of the players who played in the 2009 IPL in South Africa and may also feature in the CSA T20 League. There is a fight between the UAE T20 League and the CSA T20 League for the Aussie veteran. Of course, even BBL is in the fray. However, it is a matter of time if all the leagues have their window frozen within a few months. We would then get clarity on which players the CSA T20 League will involve.
