"Dekh Shreyas, the right thing to do"- Shreyas Iyer reveals the career-changing advice he got from Sachin Tendulkar in his early days
Shreyas Iyer had a brilliant 2022 with the bat. He ended the year as the third-highest run scorer, combining all three formats in 2022. Meanwhile, for India, he is the leading run-scorer in 2022. He has been brilliant with his batting form.
That is why many former cricketers and experts see him as India's future captain. He scored 1609 runs in 39 innings across all three formats at an average of 48.75, including one century and 14 half-centuries. His highest score of 113 not out came against South Africa in ODIs at home.
The 28-year-old will be seen in action in the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka, which starts on January 10. Recently, in an interaction with Mashable India, Iyer recalled his first ever meeting, when he had a one-on-one interaction with "Master Blaster" Sachin Tendulkar.
Iyer also hails from the same city of Mumbai, and Sachin has been his idol since his early days. He recalled that when he was 14 years old, Sachin came to BKC to give motivation to the youngsters, and he met him in the Ranji Trophy final. They had a brief chat, and Iyer asked about some batting tips from the Indian legend.
Iyer said, "I asked him, "what should I do?" He said, 'Dekh Shreyas, which you feel is perfect for the day is the right thing to do.' He said that 'do whatever you feel comfortable with on that particular day.'"
The 29-year-old struggled to perform consistently at the international level at the start of 2022. But then, with his brilliant performances across formats, he became a vital member of the team.
After a superb ODI performance in 2022, Iyer will start his 2023 50-over campaign with a game against Sri Lanka on January 10. He scored 724 runs in 17 ODIs in 2022 at an average of 55.69 and was the third-highest run-scorer in 2022 for India.
