Former CSK star Faf du Plessis to captain new CSK-based Johannesburg Super Kings in CSA T20 League
Understandably, the franchise has gone for the players that have represented CSK in the IPL. That is the reason they picked Faf du Plessis for a whopping amount of 375,000 USD in the auction. Du Plessis was part of CSK from 2013 to 2021. He played a vital role in two title triumphs during his stint.
However, he played the last season in 2022 with Royal Challengers Bangalore as the captain, but prior to that he was an integral part of the CSK setup. And now he will once again look to play for the same franchise in a different city in a different league.
And the franchise has named him the captain of the new team in the South Africa T20 league. According to the rules, every franchise can pick a maximum of five players prior to the auction, which will happen before the start of the season. The governing committee has approved a list of 30 players for the marquee list.
Notably, five players will include one local player and one uncapped local cricketer as well. Apart from Du Plessis, the franchise has also signed Moeen Ali for 400,000 USD and Maheesh Theekshana for 200,000 USD as well. Moeen has also become the third-costliest player on the marquee list.
The English all-rounder has also registered for the new UAE T20 league as well, but it might not be possible for him because both leagues will be played in the same time frame. The CSK-based franchise has also signed West Indies all-rounder, Romario Shepherd, for 175,000 USD and Gerald Coetzee for 50,000 USD as a local uncapped player.
The franchise has named Stephen Fleming as the head coach of the new team, who is also the head coach of the CSK in the IPL. Each of the six teams has been given a budget of $2 million USD to spend on players and form a team of up to 17 players.
