Asia Cup to begin from August 24 to September 9: Reports

This year is full of T20 games. The T20 World Cup is scheduled to start in Australia in October, but before that, the Asia Cup will be played in the T20 format. The Sri Lankan cricket board is ready to host the event but with a slight change in the schedule.

The SLC wants to begin the proceedings of the Asia Cup from August 24 to September 7, 2022. The multi-national event has already been postponed twice. However, it is learnt that the SLC is waiting for approval from all the participating teams.

The last edition was played in 2018, which was won by India. The Asia Cup is played either in the ODI or T20 format, and this year a total of six teams will participate. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and one other team that qualifies will square off against each other.

Earlier, the seventh edition was to be played in 2020 in Sri Lanka, but due to the outbreak of COVID-19, it was postponed to 2021. But later on, because of the pandemic, it was shifted to 2022. The Pakistan Cricket Board has already given the green signal, now the other board's decision is awaited.

It is learnt through a source that adjustments are made at the Sri Lankan board's request due to the clash of some other international fixture of some participating team. Pakistan will host England for a seven-match Twenty20 International series in late September.

However, if the event is done as per the changed schedule, it will give Pakistan time to come back and prepare for the upcoming T201 World Cup later in Australia. Paksitan is to host the next edition of the Asia Cup in 2023 with a total of six participants.

After the England series, Pakistan are likely to participate in a tri-nation series with the Black Caps and Bangladesh in New Zelanad ahead of the T20I World Cup.
