Martin Guptill surpasses India captain Rohit Sharma to achieve major acclaim in T20I cricket
Martin Guptill of New Zealand beat Rohit Sharma to become the player with the most runs scored in T20 international games. In the England series, Rohit Sharma, who had 3379 runs to his name, dropped to second place after Guptill scored 40 runs in the first T20I match against Scotland. As New Zealand went on to score a whopping 225 runs in their given 20 overs, he established himself as being in the lead by 20 runs.
After a strong start from Guptill (40 off 31 balls), the young New Zealander Fin Allen stole the show by scoring his first T20I century that day and leading NZ to a pretty significant total. In the shortest format of the game, Guptill has been a champion of aggressive batting and was once regarded as one of the most destructive openers in cricket. The right-handed batter, who is known for being in excellent physical shape, has hit two centuries and 20 half centuries in 116 games.
On the other hand, Rohit Sharma leads all other T20I batsmen with four hundreds and 26 half-centuries in 128 games. In terms of average and strike rate, the pair are relatively comparable. Rohit Sharma averages 32.18 and strikes at 139.62, while Guptill averages 32.37 and strikes at 136.39. Virat Kohli, a former captain of India, is in third place with 3,308 runs in 99 games at an incredible average of 50.12.
During the five-match T20I series against the West Indies, Rohit will have the opportunity to keep his record intact. With back-to-back T20I games scheduled, including the Asia Cup, Rohit might be able to open up a significant distance as well.
After facing the Netherlands, the Kiwis will depart for the West Indies, where India is currently competing. The T20 World Cup runners-up are hoping for a stronger performance and to capture another ICC trophy this time around.
