Predicting the strongest West Indies XI for the 2022 T20 World Cup

West Indies 2022 T20 WC

West Indies had a forgettable outing in the 2021 T20 World Cup. The two-time champions will soon want to make amends and they will have a fresh squad to achieve that. In this article, we take a look at the strongest West Indies XI for the 2022 T20 World Cup.

Since the last mega-event, the likes of Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Bravo and Chris Gayle have moved on from the squad. Nicholas Pooran is at the helm of the team and he will lead a young squad at the World Cup. There are plenty of options for the management to consider and in this article, we predict the combination that West Indies could end up with.

Openers: Kyle Mayers and Evin Lewis

Mayers and Lewis will be the openers in this strongest West Indies XI for the 2022 T20 World Cup. This department will be a difficult one for West Indies to freeze. While Evin Lewis makes himself certain for one spot, there are many contenders for the other including the likes of Kyle Mayers and Brandon King. Both these players have done well and hence, it depends on the form leading up to the event that will cement their spot. Brandon King can also feature in the middle order if required.

Middle-Order: Nicholas Pooran (C&WK), Shimron Hetmyer, and Rovman Powell

Nicholas Pooran and Rovman Powell will be the constants in this middle order. The management has to find a way to get Shimron Hetmyer to play well for the unit. He is an excellent cricketer and his raw power can take the game away from the opposition in a matter of few deliveries. The performance of this department will decide the fortunes of the team.

All-Rounders: Andre Russell, Akeal Hosein, Jason Holder and Romario Shepherd

It will be a strong all-rounders' unit for the strongest West Indies XI for the 2022 T20 World Cup. As usual, West Indies will have a good crop of all-rounders who will render balance to the unit. Andre Russell's fitness is an issue but he will hope to play for the country. Akeal Hosein and Fabian Allen will compete for the spin-bowling all-rounder's role but it might be the former who could get preferred on current form. While Jason Holder will be the leader of the pace attack, Romario Shepherd could feature at the start or in the middle overs.

Bowlers: Alzarri Joseph and Obed McCoy

Based on how they have done in IPL, Alazarri Joseph and Obed McCoy deserve a run in the West Indies squad. While Joseph will be effective on Australian pitches, McCoy's specialisation at the death will be of good use. Hayden Walsh can be used as the spinner depending on the combination while the likes of Oshane Thomas, Odean Smith and Sheldon Cottrell could also be in the picture.
