"Unfortunate, we won't be able to play him..."- Rohit Sharma names his opening partner among Gill or Ishan for 1st ODI vs SL
After registering a 2-1 win in the three-match T20I series, India and Sri Lanka will lock horns in a three-match ODI series starting on Tuesday, January 10 in Rajkot. All the senior players, who were rested in the T20I series, are back for ODIs.

It has left a big question in front of the Indian management about who will open the inning with skipper Rohit Sharma. Will it be Ishan Kishan or Shubham Gill who will open with the skipper? Notably, the pair of Gill and Kishan opened for India in three T20Is.

However, on the eve of the first ODI, the Indian skipper hinted about his possible opening pair for the first ODI game against Sri Lanka at Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati. In the media conference, Rohit said that it would be fair to give Gill a decent run after he showed consistent form in the 50-over format.

He also talked about Kishan scoring the fastest ODI double century. Rohit said that it is unfortunate that Ishan will miss the game, but we will go as planned for the team over the last 8-9 months.

The Indian skipper also praised Ishan for his fastest ODI double century and said that it was a special achievement. Rohit also added that they are looking to give every player opportunities ahead of the ODI World Cup coming later this year.

He said, "Gill has done extremely, in that position. Ishan is certainly going to miss out, but it is very unfortunate, but that doesn’t rule out anything. We are gonna try and keep everyone in the mix and see how, it plans out for us as we play a lot of games."

Apart from the openers, all eyes will be on Virat Kohli as well. India will look to have some match practise and find the right combination for the team going forward. The upcoming ODI World Cup will be held in India in October and November.
