"Virat will open in WC"- Rohit Sharma hints at Virat Kohli opening the innings in T20 WC
However, it will be interesting if India keeps on experimenting in the series with not many matches left for the World Cup or if they stick with the same team that they are looking to play in the World Cup.
Ahead of the first game, the Indian skipper, Rohit Sharma, addressed the press conference. He also spoke on whether Virat Kohli could open the innings in T20Is or not. However, Rohit said that it is also better to have an option in the team.
He further said that it is very important to have that flexibility going into a big tournament like the World Cup, and the team also wants every player to be flexible in playing in any position. Rohit stated that Virat as an opener is in the mind of the management and that is why the team hasn't picked the third opener.
The captain also highlighted that Virat regularly opens the innings for RCB in the IPL and has done really well for India as an opener. However, he also stated that KL Rahul will be the World Cup's first choice opener.
Rohit concluded, "Virat Kohli is our third opener and he will open in some of the games. In the last match of Asia Cup, we were happy with the way he played. But KL Rahul will open the batting in the World Cup, his performance sometimes goes quite unnoticed."
Ahead of the first match, veteran pacer Mohammed Shami has tested positive for COVID and been ruled out of the Australian series. However, India have announced Umesh Yadav as his replacement in the squad. India will play three T20Is each against Australia and South Africa ahead of the T20 World Cup.
