"According to me, it is..."- Ravi Shastri picks an Indian star who can break Virat Kohli's 973-run record in one IPL season

Since the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League, countless players have played in this cash-rich league. It will not be a wrong statement to say that every big player somewhere played in the IPL in their career. Some found success, while others couldn't make any impact.

But still, no one is able to come close to the record set by Virat Kohli for the most runs in a single edition of the IPL. The former RCB skipper made his record in the 2016 season, when he led his team to the final. He was the standout batter in that competition.

Virat scored a total of 973 runs in just 16 innings at a staggering average of 81.08 and a strike rate of 152.03. He also set the record for most centuries (4) in a single edition, along with seven half-centuries.

He is still the only player to cross the 900-run mark in a single IPL edition. In 2022, Jos Buttler looked like he would break Virat's record but ended with a tally of 863 runs in 2022. Thus, it is still a record to be broken. Meanwhile, former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri has picked an Indian player, who can break Virat's all-time record in the IPL.

In a discussion on Star Sports, Shastri said, "I feel, it is Subhman Gill because he is in good form and also because he plays top of the order. So he will get good number of opportunities to score runs. The pitches are good, so if he can score 80-100 runs consecutively in two or three innings, then at that point of time only he will already have 300-400 runs."

Although, Shastri reckons that it is difficult to score over 900 runs in a single season but he said that an opener gets two extra innings to bat if his team qualifies for the final. Shubman Gill started the 2023 season with a brilliant 63 against the Chennai Super Kings. But then, he registered two scores of 14 and 39 against DC and KKR.
