Daren Sammy predicts winner of T20 WC & Man of the Tournament

Former West Indies captain Daren Sammy has predicted West Indies to win the ICC T20 World Cup 2021. The Men in Maroon are the defending champions of the tournament. Also, they are the only ones to have won the competition twice. 

Daren Sammy was the captain of the West Indies squad that won the ICC T20 World Cup in 2012 and 2016. He has retired from all forms of cricket now, but Sammy believes the current Caribbean squad has got what it takes to win their third T20 World Cup. 

Speaking on an ICC Digital Show, Daren Sammy said that it was a no-brainer for him to pick the winner of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021. He said players like Kieron Pollard, Chris Gayle, Evin Lewis, Jason Holder, Fabian Allen and Andre Russell made Windies the favorites. 

“It’s a no brainer for me — West Indies all the way. When you look at West Indies, and people might say I’m sounding biased, but in the last four (three) tournaments we’ve managed to get to the final four, winning two out of that.”

Daren Sammy feels a batsman scoring most runs does not necessarily mean the team will win the tournament 

Daren Sammy further pointed out that in tournaments like the ICC T20 World Cup, the teams needed to have impact players to emerge as champions. He believed it was not necessary for a team to have the batsman who scored the most runs in the competition. 

Sammy added that for him, winning Player of the Tournament award mattered more than batting and scoring the most runs. 

“I’m more interested in who is going to be the ‘Player of the Tournament’. Somebody like an Andre Russell, who bowls and bats and comes in at crucial times, will come out with that title,” Daren Sammy concluded.
