"He can be an aggressive captain"- Gautam Gambhir picks best player for India's captaincy; Leaves out Pant, Hardik or KL

The news of a split captaincy in the Indian cricket team has already sparked some speculation following the team's disastrous exit from the 2022 T20 World Cup. Some reports confirmed that India will hand over the T20I captaincy to star all-rounder Hardik Pandya, and Rohit will remain captain in ODIs and Tests.

However, former Indian opener and member of the 2007 and 2011 World Cup winning teams, Gautam Gambhir, has picked two players that could prove to be the best candidates to lead the Indian team in the future.

As reported by ESPN Cricinfo, during an event organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), Gambhir revealed his two choices for the Indian captaincy in the future. He named Hardik as his first pick for the Indian team.

Notably, Hardik led India to a 1-0 series win over New Zealand recently and has also led his IPL franchise, the Gujarat Titans, to their maiden IPL title. Thus, his choice was obvious. Apart from Hardik, Gambhir has identified Prithvi Shaw of Maharashtra as another suitable candidate for India's captaincy.

Gambhir said, "The reason I've picked Prithvi Shaw, he is one I feel can be a very aggressive captain, a very successful captain because you see that aggression in the way a person plays the sport."

Gambhir also said that Shaw has been a bit unlucky and hasn't been able to find a place in even India's second-string team. Notably, Shaw was suspended in 2019 for a doping violation, and since then, he has been struggling with his fitness.

However, the right-hander made his mark in the longest format with a century in his debut game, but his 2019 suspension changed everything. Later, he was also sidelined from the selection radar. After that incident, it's been difficult for him to make his presence known to the Indian selector.
