Suryakumar Yadav went past MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina in an elite list of Indian batters with his 47-run knock vs NZ
India lost the first T20I on Friday against New Zealand by 21 runs at the JSCA International Stadium Complex. In reply to New Zealand's score of 176/6, Team India managed 155/9 in their 20 overs and suffered a loss in the first game. With this loss, India is trailing by 1-0 in the ongoing three-match T20I series.
Chasing the target, India had a horrible start with Ishan Kishan (4), Shubman Gill (7) and Rahul Tripathi (0) getting dismissed cheaply to put India at 15/3 in 3.1 overs. But after that, skipper Hardik Pandya (20) and vice captain Suryakumar Yadav had a 68-run fourth-wicket stand.
But once that stand was broken, India lost a few wickets on the trot. Among all the Indian batters, only Suryakumar and Washington Sundar looked comfortable against the Kiwi bowlers, especially the pacers. Sundar scored his maiden T20I half-century off 25 balls and scored 50 with five fours and three sixes.
Meanwhile, SKY got dismissed three short of his half-century and made 47 off 34 balls, with six fours and two sixes. Despite the result not going India's way, Suryakumar certainly joined an elite list of Indian batters in the shorter format.
With his 47-run inning, SKY went past former star Suresh Raina and skipper MS Dhoni to become the fifth-highest run scorer for India in the shorter format. SKY has now scored 1625 runs at an average of 46.42 and a staggering strike rate of 178/.76 with three centuries and 13 half-centuries.
Meanwhile, MS Dhoni scored 1617 runs in 85 innings with two half-centuries, and Raina scored 1605 runs in 66 innings with one century and five half-centuries. Only Virat Kohli (4008), Rohit Sharma (3853), KL Rahul (2265), and Shikhar Dhawan (1759) are above Suryakumar. Now he will be back in action in the second T20I against New Zealand on Sunday in Lucknow.
