Rohit Sharma breaks Sachin Tendilkar's huge record of Asia Cup

India faced their second successive defeat in the "super four" stage on Tuesday when Sri Lanka won the match by six wickets, chasing the target of 174 with one ball to spare. With this loss, India is on the verge of being eliminated from the Asia Cup 2022. If India gets eliminated this year, we will see a new champion.

Batting first, India made 173/8 in their 20 overs, with a brilliant half-century from the Indian skipper, Rohit Sharma, who made 72 off 41 balls with five fours and four sixes. Despite losing KL Rahul (6) and Virat Kohli (0) within the first three overs, Rohit carried on his aggressive approach.

He, along with Suryakumar Yadav (34 off 29), added 97 runs for the third wicket to bring India back on track once again. However, India's middle-order struggled once again and India could only manage 173/8 in 20 overs.

Notably, during his knock of 72 off 41, Rohit surpassed the huge record of India's master blaster Sachin Tendulkar (971 runs in 23 matches). The Indian skipper has now made 1016 runs in the history of the Asia Cup in 36 matches he has played.

Before him, there were only two batters, Sanath Jayasuriya (1220 in 25 matches) and Kumar Sangakkara (1075 in 24 matches). The defending champions lost to Pakistan on Sunday and lost to Sri Lanka in almost the same kind of scenario.

Speaking of the match, chasing the target set by India, Sri Lanka got off to a flying start with both openers adding 97 runs for the first wicket. Pathum Nissanka made 52 and Kusal Mendis scored 57. But Indian spinners came back to take three of four wickets.

However, in the end, the unbeaten partnership of 64* runs for the fifth wicket between Bhanuka Rajapaksa and skipper Dasun Shanaka helped Sri Lanka chase down the target. Rajapaksa made 25* off 17 balls, and Shanaka made 33* off 18.
