Star all-rounder replaces injured Deepak Chahar in the squad for SA ODIs

The India T20 team is in Australia to prepare for the upcoming T20 World Cup, while the ODI team is playing in the three-match series against South Africa at home. The hosts lost the first ODI by nine runs, while the second game is to be played on Sunday in Ranchi.

However, India suffered a major blow when Deepak Chahar complained about some back issues ahead of the first ODI, which led him to miss the match. Later, it was confirmed that Chahar would not be able to take part in the remaining two ODIs, and that has been ruled out.

Now, on Saturday, the Indian selection committee has announced that spin-bowling all-rounder Washington Sunday will replace Chahar for the remaining two games. Chahar will report to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and the medical team will monitor him.

Notably, the pacer is part of the standby for the T20 World Cup and is likely to travel to Australia. However, the Indian think-tank will hope that he can recover as soon as possible so that he can join the team for the mega event.

Chahar was one of the front-runners to replace ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who had already been ruled out of the tournament due to a back injury. He also did well in his limited T20I appearances against South Africa.

India is dealing with so many injuries already. Earlier, star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja missed the opportunity due to knee injury. Then veteran pacer Mohammed Shami was tested positive for Covid-19 and still hasn't recovered 100 percent.

India’s ODI squad: Shikhar Dhawan (C), Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer (vc), Rajat Patidar, Rahul Tripathi, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan (wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Shahbaz Ahmed, Shardul Thakur, Ravi Bishnoi, Kuldeep Yadav, Avesh Khan, Mohd. Siraj, Washington Sundar, Mukesh Kumar.
