Virat Kohli breaks another big record with a 62-run knock vs NED in T20 WC

India started the 2022 T20 World Cup with a win over arch rivals Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in front of over 90,000 spectators. And it was the Indian stalwart, Virat Kohli, who played an incredible innings to pull off a fantastic chase.

And on Thursday, India locked horns with the Netherlands at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The match is underway and it is likely to end in India's favour. Batting first, India scored 179/2 in their 20 overs, with Rohit Sharma scoring a 39-ball 53.

Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav added unbeaten 95-run partnerships to take India to a competitive total. Both batters also scored an unbeaten half-century. SKY made 51* off 25, with seven fours and one six, while the former Indian skipper carried on his form and made 62 off 44 balls, including three fours and two sixes.

With the knock of 62 runs, Virat has now surpassed Chris Gayle (965 runs) to become the second leading run-scorer in the history of the T2 World Cup. He has now scored a total of 989 runs in just 21 innings at an incredible average of 89.90. Virat has also scored 12 half-centuries in the World Cup.

Notably, the former Indian captain is also the only player who has won two "Man of the Tournament" awards in 2014 (319 rusn) and 2016 (273 runs). The leading run-scorer in the history of the T20 World Cup is former Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardene.

He has scored a total of 1016 runs in 31 games at an average of 39.07, including one century and six half-centuries. Looking at the form, Virat needs one more innings to become the leading run-scorer as he is just 27 runs behind Jayawardene.

India will now face a strong South Africa in their next game on Sunday at the Perth Stadium. A win in that game will ensure a place in the semi-finals of the tournament.
