IPL 2021: 8 Opening Combinations CSK Can Try Out

The opening was a conundrum for Chennai Super Kings last season. The franchise used various combinations comprising Faf du Plessis, Shane Watson, Murali Vijay, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sam Curran. However, it was only the Faf-Ruturaj combo that showed some stability. The duo also helped CSK win a few games at the end of the tournament.

That said, CSK has added a few options ahead of IPL 2021. With these options, the team has a multitude of opening combinations in its armoury. Each union has its own strength, and CSK would want to freeze it within the first few games. On that note, here is a look at eight realistic opening combinations that CSK can try out next season.

1. Faf du Plessis and Moeen Ali

The left-right combination, the stability of Faf, the explosiveness of Ali and many more. This opening combination is surely a box-office element. CSK can assure itself of at least five to six wins if they start with this combo. However, there is a risk element involved in it. With two foreigners used up, CSK could struggle with its fragile middle-order. The management will think in this direction before making any decision.

2. Faf du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad

Why change something that's already working? Faf and Ruturaj were exceptional at the back end of last season. However, Ruturaj is not in the greatest of form right now. He might be a weak link, and CSK cannot afford it in 2021.

3. Faf du Plessis and Robin Uthappa

Robin Uthappa will wear the yellow jersey next season. He is a veteran and comes in with truckloads of experience. Meanwhile, the Karnataka-born player is also displaying good form in the domestic circuit. Hence, it might not be a bad idea to start with him alongside Faf.

4. Faf du Plessis and N Jagadeesan

N Jagadeesan is arguably the best domestic batsman in recent months. He was in fine form in SMAT and got few good knocks in Vijay Hazare Trophy too. Therefore, he might get a look in at the start of IPL next season. CSK might see a future star in him, and could offer good opportunities.

5. Robin Uthappa and Moeen Ali

The middle-order can be a tough nut to crack for CSK next season. Raina, Rayudu and MS are all playing less cricket these days. Hence, it might be necessary to include an active cricketer in there. Faf can be that man and if that happens, there is a vacancy at the top. However, in Robin and Ali, there can be a decent option that has advantages of its own. Hence, this could be tried out.

6. Robin Uthappa and N Jagadeesan

Two men in form, and if both are domestic players, CSK can have both Faf and Moeen in the middle-order. That will strengthen the line-up to a great extent. The only concern remains if Robin and Jagadeesan can be consistent. If that happens, CSK will be a force to reckon with.

7. N Jagadeesan and C Hari Nishaanth

The opening combination that won Tamil Nadu its second Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy is also worth considering. The left-right combination will also be in play here. Moreover, its a homegrown duo and will please the fans. However, it's inexperienced and may not be fructified so soon.

8. Faf du Plessis and Cheteshwar Pujara

If there is an injury problem, CSK has a competent replacement in the form of Pujara. However, if there is Pujara in the XI, he must open the innings. This way, CSK can get the best out of him. If Pujara starts for CSK, they will be inclined to use Faf as his partner.
