MS Dhoni's old comments resurface after reports claim Rishabh Pant will be new vice-captain
MS Dhoni has retired from all formats of international cricket, but the quotes that he made during his time as an international player regularly resurface because they all prove correct at one point of time.
Currently in Indian cricket, there is a huge debate about the captaincy thing. Virat Kohli has stepped down as the Test captain. Rohit Sharma seems the next candidate, but he has fitness issues. In his absence, KL Rahul led the team against South Africa, but the Indian cricket team lost all the matches they played under Rahul.
Due to some personal reasons, Rahul will not play in the first ODI of the upcoming series against the West Indies cricket team. Now, in his absence, the team needs a new vice-captain. According to reports, Rishabh Pant may receive that position.
Back in 2017, Dhoni commented that the wicket-keeper is automatically the vice-captain of the team because he often guides the captain about the field placements. When MS Dhoni stepped down as the Indian captain, he regularly guided captain Virat Kohli from behind the stumps.
You can watch that comment from MS Dhoni right here:
Shane Warne feels a wicket-keeper should be vice-captain but not captain
In a recent chat with ANI, former Australian cricket team leg-spinner Shane Warne also opined that a wicket-keeper can be the deputy skipper of a team, but he differed from Dhoni’s opinion slightly as he added that a wicket-keeper cannot become the captain.
"I do not believe a wicketkeeper (Rishabh Pant) should be a captain, I believe a wicketkeeper makes a good deputy, a good vice-captain. Looking at the Indian side, Jasprit Bumrah can make a good captain, Rohit Sharma can make a good captain,” said Shane Warne.
It will be interesting to see if Pant receives an opportunity to play a role in the leadership group.
