The BCCI declared the Indian squad for the upcoming home T20I series against the New Zealand cricket team last night. Rohit Sharma was announced the new captain of the Indian T20I team as expected, while KL Rahul is the new vice-captain of the squad.

Big names like Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah have been rested for this series, while the likes of Hardik Pandya and Varun Chakravarthy have not been selected for the three T20I matches.

Pace bowlers Avesh Khan and Harshal Patel have received their maiden call-up to the Indian T20I squad, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar has retained his place. Mohammed Siraj has made a return to the T20I team along with Yuzvendra Chahal and Axar Patel.

There are three wicket-keeping options in the team, namely KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan and Rishabh Pant. Sanju Samson, who is one of the top wicket-keepers in the country, has not received a place.

However, Sanju’s recent Twitter activity hints that he is ready to place as a proper batter and not just a wicket-keeper. There are too many opening options available in the Indian T20I squad for the New Zealand series.

Some fans feel the selectors could have picked a middle-order batter like Sanju Samson. Even the Kerala-based player has tried to remind the selectors by posting the following tweet where he can be seen pulling off some excellent saves on the field.
