Angelo Mathews becomes first player to be dismissed for 99 and 199 individual score in Test cricket

Angelo Mathews

Angelo Mathews, a very good allrounder, made his international debut against Zimbabwe in November 2008. He can bat anywhere in the middle order and is a useful medium pace bowler. Mathews' impact has been so great that he has been a regular in all three formats of the game and has captained the Sri Lankan team with ease.

In November 2014, Mathews got his first ODI century against India, however Sri Lanka lost the game due to Virat Kohli's brilliance. They went on to lose all five One-Day Internationals, one of their worst losses in a bilateral series. After Sri Lanka's devastating defeats in the Test series against New Zealand in 2014-15, and their failure to rescue the ODI series, Mathews came under fire.

In the ongoing Srilanka tour of Bangladesh, On Day 1 of the first Test against Bangladesh in Chattogram on Sunday, Sri Lanka made the most of the favorable batting conditions. Angelo Mathews, the former captain, hit his 12th Test century when the visitors were 258 for four wickets at stumps.

The batsmen in Sri Lanka took advantage of winning the toss and formed partnerships to hold Bangladesh's bowlers at bay. Kusal Mendis struck 54 and joined Mathews in a 92-run third-wicket partnership that set the tone for the game.

Later, Bangladesh's hopes of taking an advantage in the match were crushed by Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal's risk-free batting. Mathews was on 114 at stumps, with Dinesh Chandimal on 34.

Since January of last year, Mathews has reached his first century. The match at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium began with a minute's silence in honor of Andrew Symonds, a former Australian Test player who died in an  accident late Saturday night near Townsville in northern Australia.

In Day 2 the Sri Lankans were bowled out for 397, an inspired innings of 199 from 397 balls  from their former skipper Angelo Mathews. Mathews was unlucky to get out at 199 off the bowling of Nayeem. Now Angelo Mathews becomes the first player to be dismissed on both 99 and 199 in Test cricket. Remember he got out on 99 versus India in the year 2009 in Mumbai.

In reply, Bangladesh batman started steadily 59/0, as the end of the day was fast approaching. They look to finish the day without losing a wicket and take the attack to the Sri Lankans from tomorrow.
