Virat Kohli shockingly announced that he will no longer be the captain of the Indian cricket team in the Test format yesterday evening with an Instagram post. This decision has surprised many fans because Kohli was excellent as the Indian Test captain.

But now that he has made up his mind, fans are looking forward to the future. India are fifth in the ICC World Test Championship right now, and they need a new leader who can take the team to glory.

Here are the top five candidates to become the next captain of India in Tests:

1. Rohit Sharma

The most obvious choice from here will be Rohit Sharma. Ajinkya Rahane’s disappointing performances led to his ouster from the vice-captain’s position.

BCCI named Rohit as the new vice-captain ahead of the South African tour. Since he was the deputy skipper, he should be the number one contender for captaincy now.

2. KL Rahul

KL Rahul led the Indian cricket team in the second Test against South Africa. While his captaincy did not impress some fans, Rahul could be a captaincy candidate.

He has led Punjab Kings in the IPL. Also, he is the vice-captain in ODIs.

3. Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah was India’s vice-captain in the second Test against the Proteas. Bumrah has led the pace attack well over the last few years.

If the BCCI takes the route of Cricket Australia, Bumrah could become the Test captain like Pat Cummins.

4. Rishabh Pant

Many cricket pundits have predicted Rishabh Pant to be the next captain of India in Tests. Pant has been a top performer in Test cricket for the country.

The southpaw was fantastic as captain for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2021. Since he can be a long-term option, team management can consider him as captain.

5. Ravindra Jadeja

Ravindra Jadeja is reportedly going to be the next captain of Chennai Super Kings. Like the other names on the list, Jadeja has been a consistent performer in Tests.

The South Africa series seemingly confirmed that Jadeja will be India’s top spinner in overseas Test matches. Thus, Jadeja has an edge over Ravichandran Ashwin in the race to captaincy.
